Activated Alumina
The industry-standard activated alumina is used extensively in compressed air dryers. Our activated alumina can be regenerated to its original adsorption capacity by purging with hot gas at 350° to 600° F. Activated alumina is for use in both heated desiccant air dryers and heatless / pressure swing compressed air dryers. Dewpoints of -100° F can be achieved depending on dryer design and operating conditions. Activated alumina is an excellent all purpose desiccant for drying compressed air and most other gases with air dryers.
- 1/ 8" (3.2 mm) bead alumina is the size most frequently used in regenerative dryers part # 1AA18.
- 1/ 4" & 3/ 16" (4.8 - 6.4 mm) bead alumina are used as a pre-bed material to support large desiccant beds and as a pre buffer for silica gel beds in desiccant air dryers.

Activated Alumina Features
1. HIGH MOISTURE CAPACITY: The high surface area and excellent pore distribution combine to give ECA activated alumina a high water adsorption capacity. Using an ECA activated alumina can reduce capital costs, energy consumption, and operating costs through smaller bed sizes and/or longer operating cycles.
2. SMOOTH BEADS/ LOW ABRASION: Ensures LESS DUSTING during tower loading and depressurization. Low abrasion means lower pressure drop and less chance for plugged or clogged pore orifices, valves or filters due to dust carryover. (LOW PRESSURE = LOW DUSTING = BETTER PERFORMANCE)
3. UNIFORM SIZE = LOW PRESSURE DROP In a packed bed, ECA activated alumina provides a low pressure drop which minimizes channeling and maximizes utilization of the whole drying capacity of the tower.
4 UNAFFECTED BY LIQUID WATER: Water slugging due to upstream failure of aftercoolers, moisture separators, drain traps or filters will not fracture ECA activated alumina. Adsorption capacity of saturated desiccant can be restored after a complete regeneration cycle.
5. HIGH CRUSH STRENGTH: ECA activated alumina desiccant limits dusting when loading air dryer towers. A high crush strength makes activated alumina a good pre-bed material for use with other types of desiccants in mixed desiccant air dryer towers.
